Christmas Lights on Temple Square

The family decided the weather was too mild to stay indoors tonight, so we headed out for an hour or two at Temple Square, followed by a milk shake at Paces in Bountiful.

Labor Day 2010 - Snowbasin

(download)
In a wild diversion from our normal sedentary lifestyle, we joined the Halls family at Snowbasin for a little hiking this Labor Day. Sun and the kids fared well, but I paid the price of a bacon and cheese rich diet on my way up the mountain. The weather is turning cool, but the sun was out, and we had a good time.

Our real purpose in going to Snowbasin was to get Sam set up with a 2010/2011 season pass, but the day evolved into an experience that was a welcome change. There's only a few more weekends of this type of adventure in the resort area...get out there before you have to do so with skis & snowboards.

Cheap iPad Stand

(download)
Undoubtedly, the various phases and setups of my iPad will be numerous. For today though, I have found a pretty handy iPad stand that won't set you back the $40 - $50 everyone seems to want in the retail stores.

Long ago, a buddy of mine @roistone gave me a bookend. He and I had the same home office desk phone, and he said that used properly, this bookend gave the office phone just the right amount of "tilt" to see the caller ID. After following his suggestion, I found he was absolutely right, and it never moved from it's spot on my desk...until today.

I was growing frustrated with always having my Apple microfiber iPad cover on, simply for the angle feature. If there's a spec of dust in a 5 mile radius, it will soon attach itself to that particular cover. I tried "picture easels" to hold my iPad horizontally and vertically, but they were too flimsy and moved at the slightest touch.

A bookend like this (mine is made of metal) has enough weight to offer resistance against tapping on the screen that comes with an iPad. It can hold the device in either horizontal or vertical mode. The only other thing you might want besides the bookend is one of those "sticky pads" you're supposed to keep on the dashboard in your car to keep things from sliding around. It makes a really good base, keeping the iPad from slipping. (I flipped the one I am using over to obscure my former employer's logo on the sticky pad).

I hope this helps someone out there looking for a solution. It may not be perfect, but it is inexpensive. Let me know if you have found something that works well for you. I'm always looking for a better way.

Truck

I pass this truck almost daily.  To some it may be an eyesore, but there is something nostalgic about it that I like.
